Blitzen Valley Bliss!
Tuesday 1 May 2012 — Category: Outings
Blitzen Valley 2012 is the fourth photo album of pictures taken during my April trip to Eastern Oregon. It is in this valley that I set up my “base camp” at the Frenchglen Hotel, and through which I traveled each day as I visited other areas in the region.
I took a wide variety of pictures in a wide variety of locations — from the northern part of the valley on the southern shores of Malheur Lake, through the offshoot Diamond Valley, down to the southern end of the valley in the Frenchglen area. A handful of photos of the Blitzen Valley were taken outside of the valley: from the Harney Valley, north of Malheur Lake. So, there’s a lot to see in this album!
The entire, relatively-small valley is accessible via Oregon Route 205, which runs along the western edge of the valley, from the Narrows RV Park in the north down to the Frenchglen Hotel in the south. The eastern side of the valley is reached via side roads that branch off Route 205.
This is a very isolated and empty part of Oregon. When you stumble upon the rare, tiny store or gas station, you feel very grateful that such establishments even exist, and you’re reminded that you’re not the only living human being in the region after all! It’s a totally different way of living that what I’m used to in the Willamette Valley, and since I thrive on silence and solitude, I kinda liked it! Maybe it’s time to start checking the real estate listings!
I took a total of 241 photos over four days. The photos in the valley from the fifth day will be in their own separate album, because they focus specifically on wildlife in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, which encompasses a large portion of the Blitzen Valley. I've narrowed them down to the best 39 pictures, including six panoramic photos. It’s really a region of wide open spaces — Steens Mountain itself is fifty miles long! — which are difficult to capture except through panoramas. You can see all the photos in the Blitzen Valley 2012 photo album.
