Is Photography In the Genes?
Sunday 13 March 2011 — Category: Thoughts
Can a passion for photography be inherited? Is it passed along in the genes?
It’s hard to say for sure. But I do believe I can trace my life-long interest in photography back to my grandfather’s life-long interest in photography. I don’t recall my grandfather David ever talking to me, or teaching me anything, about photography, even though we lived in the same town of Santa Maria, California.
So the passion didn’t come from him in a direct manner like that. But it seems as if I inherited it from him all the same — perhaps, in some sort of obscure genetic or spiritual sense. I do remember occasional family gatherings at his house — he would fire up the slide projector to show us photos from recent or past trips. We would also watch some home movies he took in the “old days” (like when my mom was little!).
Recently, I have been very busy creating my latest Web site: David Kaukonen dot com. It’s a tribute to the life of my grandfather, and his photography, based upon some 60-year-old negatives and photo prints that came into my possession recently. I’ve been putting a large amount of time and energy into this project, but the wonderful results have made it all worthwhile.
The grand opening of my grandfather’s Web site is today, March 13, 2011, the 98th anniversary of his birth. If you have some spare time, why don’t you head on over and take a look around. It’s apparent to me that the seeds of my passion for photography were planted long before I was born!
