Going Wide
Wednesday 10 August 2011   —   Category: Equipment
Yesterday, one of my favorite people in the world — the UPS delivery guy — brought me the latest addition to my lens kit: a Sony DT 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6 zoom lens. As usual, because my Sony Alpha α55 is an APS-C camera, the 35mm-equivalent focal length of this lens on the α55 is 1.5 times larger: 16.5-27mm.

Before I got this lens, the widest angle on any of my lenses was 24mm (35mm-equivalent: 36mm). While this IS wide-angle, it’s more of a medium-wide-angle than wide-wide-angle. For some shots, I was definitely feeling cramped at this focal length. Sometimes you can back up only so far!

Of course, as soon as I get a new toy, the first thing I want to do is try it out. So I asked my youngest daughter, Olivia, to pose for me while I stuck this lens in her face. You can see the nice distored result to the right. So far, so good!

A better test will be when I take this lens on its first photographic outing — which I’m planning on doing tomorrow. I don’t expect that I will have a photo album on this Web site consisting of only photos taken with this lens, but I would imagine that most of my future albums will contain some extra-wide-angle photos.

Well, I had better get ready for tomorrow’s outing. Expect a new photo album soon!
