California Birds Hatch Babies
Tuesday 28 August 2012 — Category: Shooting
pair of California Quail which was visiting our backyard. During the following couple of months we saw them once in a while, but not very often. It was hard to tell if they were still in the area or not.
Then the other day we saw the two Quail with two babies — I like to call them Quailettes. They were out by our vegetable garden, but I didn’t have my camera handy. Yesterday morning I was looking out of my bedroom window, brushing my teeth, when I saw the California Quail family in our backyard again. I quickly put down my toothbrush and ran to grab my camera. After racing downstairs to the back window, I was afraid to scare them away by going outside, so I settled for taking pictures through the sliding glass door.
As in June, shooting through these two layers of window glass seemed to reduce the quality of the images, so in general I was not overly happy with them. I wish I could have taken the photos outside instead. But if I had gone outside, I most likely would not have gotten any pictures at all. Therefore, shooting through the window was a reasonable compromise.
In the first photo, you can see the proud papa and mama Quail perched on top of the fence, keeping an eye on the Quailettes down below. In the second photo, you can see the cute babies, scrounging around the garden for something to eat. You can click on the photos to see larger versions. Congratulations to the new parents!
