In July 2007, when visiting my parents down in California, my wife and I got to spend the night at San Simeon
. It was the first time we had spent a night together in a hotel without the kids since 1993 when we stayed at the Galilee YMCA
in Israel! It was long overdue! The California Central Coast
scenery was gorgeous, and the elephant seals
On our way down from Oregon, we stayed overnight in Sacramento,
the capital of California, to visit some historic sites. Besides a stop at Sutter's Fort State Historic Park
(my Swiss wife proudly reminding us that the famous Sutter
was Swiss!), we also took a tour of the state capitol.
It is a very photogenic building — I got some great shots of the exterior, and even though it was kind of dark inside, I also got some worthy shots of the interior. You can see all of those pictures in the companion California Capitol 2007
The trip home wasn't quite as fun. My youngest daughter, Olivia, got carsick twice, and right before Sacramento I got the first flat tire (while driving) of my life. We had to totally empty the very-full trunk in order to get the spare tire out. Everyone was amazed how fast I changed it! Ah yes, the joys and sorrows of a trip to California!
